In this Managing Safe Playspaces course you will learn about:

  1. The difference between the Canadian Playground Safety Institute (CPSI), which is the agency providing this training and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) which is the agency that publishes the national standard which playground equipment in Canada must comply with.
  2. “The Fatal Four” playground hazards.
    • These are the four specific areas where children have died on playground equipment in Canada. Coincidentally, these four types of playground hazards can be eliminated through appropriate maintenance of playground and some basic steps to ensure compliance to the CSA playground standard (CSA Z614).

      • Entrapment,
      • Entanglement,
      • Protective Surfacing Violations
  3. Age-appropriate play activities and labeling.
    • You will also learn about what makes certain play components age-appropriate (or inappropriate) for children in various age groups and how they can and should be labeled to help ensure safety of playspace users.
  4. Risk management and record keeping.
    • We will venture into the basics of risk management and what types of records should be kept on file in paper or electronic copy to help protect the field inspector and playground owner from risk.
